The influence of vibrational excitation on the reaction of F− with CH3I — •Tim Michaelsen, Björn Bastian, Jennifer Meyer, and Roland Wester — Institut f. Ionenphysik und Angewandte Physik, Universität Innsbruck
We study ion molecule reaction dynamics in a crossed beam setup using velocity map imaging [1]. One focus of our research are reactions of halide anions with methylhalides, which represent an interesting model system to study bimolecular nucleophilic substitution reactions (SN2). In recent years we have extended our investigations of such systems to study microsolvation effects as well as the influence of vibrational excitation on branching ratios and reaction dynamics [2].
Here we report on recent results investigating the influence of C-H stretch excitation on the reaction of F− with CH3I at various collision energies. The CH3I is excited by a broadband OPO/OPA laser prior to collision and the excited fraction is probed using a photodissociation and state selective REMPI scheme. The experimental results are compared with recently published quasiclassical trajectory calculations for the same system [3].
