The polaron quasiparticle, an impurity dressed by phonon modes, is a fundamental concept to understand dynamics in a many-body system. While this theory was originally applied to understand the dynamics of an electron in a lattice, it generalizes to condensed matter as well as atomic physics problems.
In our experiment we immerse a fermionic 6Li impurity into a 133Cs Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The high mass imbalance allows us not only to investigate the polaron spectrum but it also gives us insights into the influence of few-body effects on the polarons, namely the Efimov effect. Due to the big difference in the gravitational sag of both species we implement a bichromatic trapping potential consisting of a large optical trap to achieve the Cs BEC and a tightly focused, translatable trap (<10 µ m), to transfer and confine the Li cloud inside the BEC and precisely position it to get the highest possible phase space overlap.
