Optical Spectroscopy: an alternative educational approach to the Laboratory — •Ioannis Sianoudis1, Nikolaos Merlemis2, and Katerina Skouroliakou31Department of Biomedical Sciences — 2Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics — 3Department of Biomedical Engineering, University West Attica, Athens, Greece, (jansian@uniwa.gr, merlemis@uniwa.gr, kskourol@uniwa.gr)

The excessive increase in the number of undergraduate students at a new university and the lack of sufficient instruments and laboratory facilities made it necessary to search for other pedagogically acceptable forms of laboratory exercises. This contribution presents such a version of conducting a laboratory exercise, as a applicable concept of a series of corresponding lab exercises, in which students understand the experiment, its equipment arrangement, observe the metering process, and obtain the intended measurements, from pictures and displays of the instruments projected on the laboratory screen. Further work, data processing and writing of reports follows the usual. In this regard, optical spectra of various light sources are obtained using a conventional, appropriately modified spectroscope. The main scenario of the exercise provides the calibration process, the identification of linear spectra and the recognition of a series of unknown light emitted sources. In addition, spectra are obtained for comparison using a commercial CCD spectrometer. Experience and mid-term evaluation has shown that this concept, under the given conditions, has made a significant contribution to a successful educational outcome.
