Student centered research based projects are highly motivating — Franz-Josef Schmitt1, Nediljko Budisa2, and •Reinhard Krause-Rehberg1 — 1Institute of Physics, Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg — 2Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) for chemical synthetic biology, University of Manitoba
Student-centered research based projects allow students to design their own research program. "iGEM - Synthetic Biology" at Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) was introduced in 2014 teaching the basics of biological chemistry and complex laboratory work while allowing for the development and organization of a research project by the students themselves. Finally the students present their results during the international "BIOMOD" or "iGEM" competition.
At Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) pupils can conduct experiments for the "jugend forscht" competition held each year. Actually a pupil designs microscopic positron sources for spectroscopy for the participation in 2020.
The Orientierungspraktikum at MLU encourages master of physics students to conduct research oriented mini projects in the working groups of the physics department with advanced projects like x-ray absorption by nanoparticles or characterisation of nano pores in glasses by positron annihilation spectroscopy.
The concept of Student centered research based projects is aimed to be introduced into the practicum master of physics as mandatory part of the curriculum at MLU. Chances and risks of such an approach are shortly discussed.
