DCMIX-4: experiments on thermodiffusion in fullerene and solvent mixtures on ground and aboard the International Space Station ISS — •Marcel Schraml1, Ane Errarte2, Mohammed Mounir Bou-Ali2, and Werner Köhler1 — 1Institute of Physics, University of Bayreuth, 95440 Bayreuth, Germany — 2Mechanical and Manufacturing Department, MGEP Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa, Mondragon, Spain
Diffusive flows in a non-isothermal multicomponent fluid are characterized by complex cross-coupling phenomena between all concentration and temperature gradients. Beside the well known Fickian diffusion, a mass flux due to a concentration gradient, there is another contribution to the total mass flux, the so-called Soret effect or thermodiffusion. Since the number of unknown coefficients increases quadratically with the number of components, such multicomponent systems quickly become intractable, and today’s research focuses mainly on ternary mixtures as multicomponent model systems. Within the ESA/Roscosmos DCMIX program, measurements are performed under microgravity conditions aboard the International Space Station ISS to generate a benchmark system for comparision with ground-based laboratory experiments. On the poster we will focus on the currently completed DCMIX-4 campaign which includes a sample of solvents and fullerene. We are going to explain the different measurement techniques on ground and aboard the ISS and present some first results of the experiments.
