CrI3/NbSe2/CrI3 van der Waals heterostructure: Superconducting spin-valve? — •Chandan K Singh1 and Mukul Kabir1,2 — 1Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, India — 2Center for Energy Science, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, India
The proximity of ferromagnetic insulator (FI) and superconductor (S) has attracted the scientific community because of its rich physics and the influence of ferromagnet on the superconductor. Within the first-principles calculations, here we investigate the van der Waals heterostructure of NbSe2 a two-dimensional (2D) superconductor and monolayer CrI3 a 2D ferromagnetic insulator. Results indicate that magnetism is induced in the NbSe2 layer while the moments in the CrI3 layers ferromagnetically align. The magnetic moment developed at the Nb-sites decay to zero for antiparallel spin configuration in the CrI3 layers. Further, we discuss the effects on the metallicity in the NbSe2 layer concerning the relative spin order in the CrI3 layers and discuss the survival of Ising spin-orbit coupling and nodal topological superconductivity in the NbSe2. These results confirm the theoretical predictions by de Gennes for the thin-film FI/S/FI systems and also indicate the CrI3/NbSe2/CrI3 van der Waals heterostructure a possible candidate for superconducting spin-valve.
