Impact of the precursor alloy composition on the mechanical properties of nanoporous gold — •Birthe Zandersons1, Lukas Lührs1, and Jörg Weissmüller1,2 — 1Institute of Materials Physics and Technology, Hamburg University of Technology — 2Institute of Materials Research, Materials Mechanics, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht
Due to its chemical stability and the tunable structure size from a few to several hundred nanometers, nanoporous gold (NPG) is an attractive model system for small-scale material behavior. Its mechanical properties have been investigated over many years. Clear distinctions in stiffness and strength caused by variations of the solid fraction have been reported. Yet, a systematic investigation is still missing. Therefore, we systematically dealloyed AuAg alloys with Au amounts between 20 and 35 at.% electrochemically in 1 M HClO4 or via free corrosion in concentrated HNO3. Compression tests with continuous loading and with load/ unload protocols explored the stress-strain behavior and Young’s modulus. We confirm a significant depending of the mechanical performance on the master alloy compositions and validate an impact of the topological genus.
