The brookite phase of TiO2 is much less explored than the other two polymorphs (rutile and anatase), despite its potential applications in photocatalytic CO2 reduction and water splitting. The first hydration layer and surface hydroxyl groups on brookite (210) surface and their structural changes under photo-irradiation have been considered to play significant roles in the process of such applications, thus will be elucidated at the atomic scale in this study by means of combining high-resolution liquid-environment atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging using a custom-built equipment and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. An interesting structural feature of the hydration layer of brookite TiO2 (210) was observed by AFM imaging, which later disappeared under ultraviolet irradiation in preliminary results. The origins of the feature and its photo-switching behavior will be clarified.
