α-RuCl3 is a prime candidate to be close to the realization of the Kitaev model in a real material. The model is of interest due to its exact solution with a spin-liquid ground state and emerging Majorana excitations. Additional Heisenberg and off-diagonal terms in the Hamiltonian of α-RuCl3 distinguish it from a pure Kitaev system which leads to an antiferromagnetically ordered ground state below T = 7 K. By applying a magnetic field above 8 T parallel to the honeycomb plane the ordered phase can be suppressed and a new phase emerges which is predicted to have spin-liquid character. We have performed detailed studies on the longitudinal and transverse heat transport in α-RuCl3 for magnetic fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the honeycomb plane to explore the field-induced phase.
