Investigations on the usage of ATLAS pixel sensors in neutron dosimetry — Jens Weingarten, •Alina Landmann, and Kevin Kröninger — TU Dortmund, Lehrstuhl für Experimentelle Physik IV, 44227 Dortmund
Thermal and slow neutrons represent a serious health risk to the human body. The measurement of real-time neutron flux in facilities where these neutron energy ranges are present is a useful tool in the determination of the personal health hazards for exposed individuals. This thesis examines the usability of ATLAS pixel sensors for this purpose. The indirectly ionizing abilities of neutrons demand a converter layer in order to produce detectable directly ionizing secondary particles in neutron-nuclear interaction. Initially, a Geant4 simulation of the converter-detector-setup is performed to determine the optimum thickness of the converting layer with regard to conversion- and detection-efficiency. Further investigations include the production of the detector and on-site-trial in a proton therapy center.
