All realizations of optical photon-photon quantum gates to date suffer from low efficiency [1]. Theory suggests that this limitation can be overcome using Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an optical cavity of moderate finesse [2]. We have set up a new vacuum system, which houses a cavity, in which an ultracold atomic ensemble is held in an optical dipole trap. The ensemble is cooled in multiple stages to a temperature of 0.2 µK. This low temperature is needed to achieve a long coherence time [3]. We report on the observation of cavity Rydberg EIT. This is a promising step on the way to a future realization of a photon-photon gate.
