Compact localized boundary states in a quasi-1D electronic necklace-diamond chain — •C. Morais Smith — Utrecht University, the Netherlands
Both topological states of matter and compact localized states have been proposed for performing quantum computations. Topological states could be used because of their protection against perturbations that respect the protecting symmetry of the topological modes. Compact localized states have been shown to be very robust as well and are protected against perturbations outside their localization regime and by local symmetries. Here, we theoretically introduce and experimentally verify the notion of compact localized boundary states. These states are compactly localized at the boundary of a quasi-1D chain and do not decay into the bulk. We explicitly show which perturbations are allowed and how to experimentally change the wave function amplitude on the boundary sites, thus providing the experimental realization of a robust compactly localized boundary state.
