X-ray absorption spectroscopy has become a valuable technique to study non-equilibrium dynamics due to its sensitivity to electronic and lattice dynamics combined with its element-specificity. The SCS instrument of the European X-ray free-electron laser offers unprecedented energy resolution and dynamic range in X-ray absorption spectra and their pump-induced changes. We report the time-resolved, spectroscopic analysis at the L 2,3 -edges of nickel-metal obtained in transmission geometry. This spectroscopic analysis was combined with ab initio DFT calculations. We find redshifts and reduced peak intensities of the pumped spectra, which can be related to a reduction of the magnetic moment and an electronic redistribution, respectively.
