We introduce and analyse a mathematical model where the collapse of a society can be the result not only of a depletion of natural resources, but also of its inability to maintain a balance between needs and aspirations of its citizens. The latter is measured by the concept of ``essentiality'' whose interplay with the environmental impact due to the consumption of goods can lead to different regimes of sustainability.
