Electrons and molecules -- what role will hydrogen play in decarbonising our economy? — •Philipp C. Verpoort, Falko Ueckerdt, and Gunnar Luderer — Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Germany

Hydrogen with a low carbon footprint will be crucial to the decarbonisation of hard-to-electrify sectors in coming decades, where it can replace chemical feedstocks in industry and fuels in certain transport applications. We present results of hydrogen scenarios in the decarbonisation of the German economy obtained from the REgional Model of INvestments and Development (REMIND), which is a macroeconomic growth model with an in-depth representation of energy systems developed at the Potsdam-Institute for Climate Impact Research. We further investigate potential challenges and trade-offs in different hydrogen strategies, with a focus on hydrogen trade, the hydrogen merit order, and the competition between green (from renewable electricity) and blue (from natural gas using CCS) hydrogen.
