Study of superconducting coils impacted by high intensity proton beam — •D. Gancarcik, F. Abusaif, A. Bernhard, A. Grau, N. Glamann, D. Saez de Jauregui, A. Will, and D. Wollmann — KIT, Karlsruhe, Germany

The damage mechanisms and limits of superconducting accelerator magnets due to the impact of high intensity particle beams have been subject to extensive studies in the past years. As part of this two experiments were performed in CERN's HiRadMat facility. Superconducting Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn strands were impacted by the SPS proton beam at room and cryogenic temperature, respectively. A follow up experiment currently under preparation aims at testing and advancing the theoretical understanding of the damage mechanisms and limits on small racetrack coils. This contribution discusses the fabrication of the sample coils and the simulation of their performance, as well as the design of the experimental setup, which will ensure an energy deposition in range of interest.
