Charge order in two-dimensional materials — •Erik van Loon — Division of Mathematical Physics, Department of Physics, Lund University

Charge-ordering in two-dimensional materials involves simultaneous changes in the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom. The precise manifestation of the charge-density wave depends sensitively on the experimental conditions [1] (substrate, doping, etc.), and there is some controversy over the mechanism responsible for the ordering. Material-specific theory can help resolve theses questions. Here, we use a theoretical approach called fluctuation diagnostics [2] to disentangle the contributions to the charge-ordering instability. This helps explain the scanning tunnelling spectroscopy experiments on the charge-density waves in TaS2 [1,2] and VS2 [3].
