Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cells and oral keratinocytes have different cell mechanics and because of that they have different natural frequencies. This characteristic is used to selectively destroy cancer cells.
For this purpose, ultrasonic waves at a resonant frequency of 90kHz were used in burst mode to achieve the largest possible deflection of the ultrasonic transducer. The ultrasonic actuators were electrically excited using a flexible ultrasonic generator developed by ATHENA Technologie Beratung GmbH, Paderborn. Investigation of the active current, which is proportional to the transducer tip velocity, showed that the active current depends on the set active time. If the active time is too low, the active current is not able to reach the desired target current. The longitudinal deflection of the ultrasonic probe in burst mode is comparable to the one in continuous mode. The setpoint current amplitude and the active time are decisive parameters. In addition, the transverse deflection was investigated, showing that this vibration is larger than the longitudinal one.
