Thin films of the iron-based metallic glass (Fe0.9Co0.1)78Si12B10 (FeCoSiB) are seen as a promising candidate for technical applications in high sensitivity magnetic field sensors and have been utilized extensively within the CRC 1261 "Biomagnetic Sensing". Thermal annealing of these films leads to a decrease in quality of the desired magnetic properties depending on the parameters of the annealing process.

In situ grazing incidence high-energy x-ray total scattering experiments were used to investigate the onset of structural changes occurring in the material. Films of thickness ranging from 0.05 to 1 µ m were investigated under varied annealing conditions with temperatures up to 700C. From these measurements we were able to observe two separate crystallization phase transitions and the emergence of textured structures. Further analysis of the scattering from the amorphous phase may give further insight into the initial structural changes the material undergoes during annealing and their influence on magnetic properties.
