Altermagnets are materials with zero net magnetization, alike traditional antiferromagnets, as well as a characteristic alternation of spin polarization for the electronic structure in reciprocal space, due to the relative orientation for anisotropic crystal field effects on different magnetic sublattices in direct space. This may have significant implications for possible spintronics and nano-electronics applications [1]. We report about the ab initio study of magnetic excitations in the case of the conducting, colinear antiferromagnetic altermagnet material RuO2 [2].
