We selected antiferromagnetic domains in a magnetoelectric LiCoPO4 single crystal by illuminating the sample by light while cooling through the Néel temperature. The experimental results and symmetry analysis indicate that the thermal gradient and resulting heat flow are responsible for such a novel effect: Propagation of thermally-activated quasi-particles is nonequivalent in different antiferromagnetic domains. The microscopic mechanism behind the observed effect is not clear at the moment, calling for future theoretical modeling.
