Coherent acoustic phonons (CAPs) enable ultrafast control of solids and have been exploited for applications in various acoustic devices. THz-induced ultrafast Coulomb forces in a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) junction can locally generate CAP wave packets that propagate with low losses and form longitudinal acoustic standing waves in a thin Au film on mica [1,2]. Here we develop a discrete lattice model to simulate acoustic phonon propagation in well-defined nanostructures. We predict that transverse acoustic phonons can be detected in 1D chains or in 2D thin films by THz-STM. This enables investigation of mechanical properties and electron-phonon interaction in nano-materials at the atomic scale. [1] S. Sheng, et al. Physical Review Letters 129, 043001 (2022). [2] M.
