Teamwork makes the beam work -- a whirlwind tour of plasma-accelerator experiments at SLAC, CERN and DESY — •Carl A. Lindström — Universität Oslo/DESY — Laureate of the DPG-Nachwuchspreis für Beschleunigerphysik 2022
Particle accelerators have numerous applications in physics, life sciences, medicine and industry, and the demand for particle energy and flux is rapidly increasing. To maintain cost effectiveness, new accelerator technologies are required. For linear accelerators, plasma-based acceleration can achieve acceleration gradients several orders of magnitude higher than conventional RF technology -- promising shorter and cheaper facilities. Similarly, plasma lenses can provide ultra-compact beam focusing. In this talk, I present three plasma-accelerator experiments -- positron acceleration in hollow plasma channels at SLAC, discharge-current-based plasma lensing at CERN, and beam-quality preservation in an electron-driven plasma accelerator at DESY -- with an emphasis on the tremendous teamwork required to perform such experiments.
