Over the last years, attention has been drawn to the development of an efficient conversion process of renewable electrical energy to chemical energy (Power-to-X processes). To this end, plasmachemical conversion processes can provide a unique medium for transforming greenhouse gases like CO2 into valuable chemical energy carriers. Currently, self-sustained plasmachemical conversion processes are associated with a low energy efficiency due to the difference in required energy for ionization and stimulation of chemical reactions. In contrast, a non-self-sustained discharge permit independent modulation of ionization and chemical reactions.

We report on the development of a non-self-sustained plug-flow reactor which is externally ionized by an electron beam gun. Furthermore, a supersonic gas flow provide reaction conditions favorable for the energy efficiency of the conversion process. Variation in feedstock materials permit synhtesis of multiple energy carriers such as MeOH, CH4 and H2.
