PIC simulations on the emittance of protons emitted from laser irradiated sub-micrometer thin targets — •Masoud Afshari, Thomas Rösch, and Jörg Schreiber — Physics Department, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Garching, Germany
In contrast to Target-Normal-Sheath-Accelerated (TNSA) protons from thick foils, where ε<0.004 mm-mrad was demonstrated experimentally 20 years ago [1], there have been experimental indications of significantly larger emittance values when using sub- micrometer thin targets [2]. We have started investigations with the particle in cell (PIC) code EPOCH [3] to investigate this matter. Our results based on the latest version 4.19 show that binary collisions might be responsible for a drastic increase of emittance.
We acknowledge support from the Centre for Advanced Laser Applications (CALA), and Super Computer LRZ under application number 24836.
