By combining a novel diode-pumped alexandrite ring laser with a narrow bandwidth (FWHM ∼3 MHz) and a tuned interferometer (FWHM ∼7.5 MHz), a separation of the atmospheric molecular and aerosol backscatter in the receiver of the mobile Lidar system (VAHCOLI) is possible. Matching the frequency of the pulsed laser from pulse to pulse with sub-MHz accuracy relative to the interferometer enables Doppler aerosol measurements with a largely reduced Rayleigh signal. This enables aerosol measurements from the ground up to an altitude of ∼25 km as well as Doppler wind measurements from the Doppler shift. The technical specifications of the VAHCOLI Lidar system (1m3) allow background-free measurements during the day and 24/7 measurement operation in the future.
