Use of High-concentration Lithium-ion Electrolyte to Overcome Challenges of High-temperature Lithium Batteries — •Tianle Zheng1 and Peter Müller-Buschbaum1,21TUM School of Natural Sciences, Chair for Functional Materials, 85748 Garching, Germany — 2TUM, MLZ, 85748 Garching, Germany

Lithium secondary batteries (LSBs) have witnessed explosive growth in the last decade. Traditional Li-ion batteries, on the other hand, are severely constrained in high-temperature applications due to the low thermal stability of the electrolyte/electrode interface and electrolyte decompositions in the cell. Herein, we demonstrate a new electrolyte that achieves excellent stable long-term cycling at 100°C, well beyond the typical 60°C limits of normal conventional Li-ion batteries. The highly concentrated lithium oxalyldifluoroborate (LiODFB) is selected as the only lithium salt with a carefully designed high thermal stability solvent group. As a result, this unique high-concentration electrolyte promotes the formation of a stable and inorganic solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer on the electrode at elevated temperature, leading to improved performance in MCMB/Li and lithium iron phosphate (LFP)/Li half-cells. Moreover, it achieves reversible capacities of 160 and 350 mA h/g, respectively, with Coulombic efficiencies (CEs) > 99.3%. Subsequently, we further investigate the mechanism of high-concentration electrolytes by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and XPS characterization techniques, exploring a new way for future high-temperature electrolytes for Li-ion batteries.
