The cycling stability of alkali metal batteries using a metal anode is often limited by dendritic growth.1,2 Hereby, the initial stages of metal deposition and dissolution play a key role since they have a huge impact on the macroscopic morphology of the deposits.3
In this study, the initial stages of sodium and lithium deposition on Au(111) from the ionic liquid N-methyl-N-propylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl)imide ([MPPip][TFSI]) are investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in situ scanning tunnelling microscopy. The deposition of both alkali metals starts at underpotentials of approximately 1 V with island formation and the following underpotential deposition includes more than two monolayers.4
