On superconductors the interaction of unpaired electron spins of magnetic atoms with the Cooper pairs gives rise to so called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. These states can be probed on the atomic scale using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). YSR states are influenced by the environment of the atom on the surface such as its position on the lattice or a charge density wave (CDW).
Here, we investigate Mn atoms on 2H-NbSe2. Using the tip of a STM we build chains of Mn atoms. Interestingly, densely packed Mn chains exhibit inelastic excitations outside the superconducting gap along with YSR states. These inelastic excitations depend on the parity of the number of atoms in the chain, and vary in intensity and energy along the chain. We investigate the evolution of the inelastic excitations and YSR states with increasing chain length.
