Correlations between electrons are at the core of numerous phenomena in atomic, molecular, and solid-state physics. Recent experiments uncovered pronounced energy correlations among individual electrons in vacuum generated by pulsed photoemission [1,2]. In a femtosecond electron microscope beam, the resulting spectral and spatial features are characteristic of the number n of electrons in each pulse [1].
In this contribution [3], we present first experiments exploring collisions between single and double free-electron states. Employing time-structured photoemission, we characterize energy correlations as a function of the n=1 and n=2 pulse delay. We realize conditions for efficient energy exchange and identify a scenario reminiscent of billiards-like sequential scatterings. In the future, such controlled few-particle interactions hold promise for enhanced imaging and spectroscopy schemes, while also enabling fundamental studies probing free-electron entanglement.
