Investigating ion-surface interactions at the atomic level is crucial for understanding material dynamics, but direct experimental observation is lacking due to the ultrafast, transient nature of these interactions. Traditionally limited to computer simulations, our group has broken new ground by developing a method to generate the world's shortest monoenergetic keV ion pulses, with current durations of approximately 5 ps and potential to reach the sub-ps regime. This breakthrough was achieved through geometric cooling of a super-sonic gas-jet and strong field ionization via femtosecond laser pulses, combined with miniaturization to prevent ion beam spreading. Using these ultrashort ion pulses, we conducted the first ion-based pump-probe experiment, employing graphene for its durability and fast electronic response. This novel setup allowed us to observe hot electron emission following ion impact, similar to 2PPE experiments but induced by ions, marking an unprecedented exploration of ion-induced phenomena. These findings not only validate our approach but set a new benchmark for temporal resolution in studying these phenomena, promising future insights into the non-equilibrium dynamics of electronic excitation in solids post-ion impact.
