Towards Large Schrödinger Cat States with Optical Photons — •Hendrik Hegels, Michael Eichenberger, Stephan Dürr, and Gerhard Rempe — Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, Hans-Kopfermann-Str. 1, 85748 Garching, Germany

Large Schrödinger cat states allow probing the border between quantum physics and classical physics. At the same time, they provide a valuable resource for continuous variable quantum computing, quantum communication and quantum error correction schemes. In practice these applications require Schrödinger cat states with mean photon number 4. There are several experimental demonstrations of optical cat states, but so far none could reach or even surpass this limit. Here, we present an apparatus based on Rydberg-EIT in an atomic ensemble in an optical cavity that has the potential to overcome this limit and produce large optical cat states for the first time.
