Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is a key building block for the quantum-safe encryption schemes needed to protect sensitive communications against the growing threat of many-qubit quantum computers in the coming decades. We present our prototype of a CV-QKD system for metropolitan fiber optical links based on the discrete modulation (DM) of coherent states and compare it to an earlier iteration. We propose solutions to several technical challenges of the implementation, including procedures for automatic working-point stabilization, calibration, as well as phase recovery and tracking. Asymptotic keyrate estimates as a performance metric are discussed in the context of additional constraints imposed by the error correction implemention.
