Ammonia (NH3) is an important chemical widely used as fertiliser and in the chemical industry. Plasma-catalysis has attracted great interest in the last years as an alternative for the energy intensive thermal-catalytic synthesis of ammonia via the Haber-Bosch process. The plasma generates photons, radicals, excited and metastable states which lead to and additional activation of the precursor hydrogen and nitrogen molecules, thereby lowering the activation energy needed for the generation of NH3.
In this contribution, the effect of changes in pressure in the range of 3 Pa to 1000 Pa, the hydrogen-nitrogen gas composition, and the presence and position of a commercial Ruthenium catalyst (2 wt% Ru on γ-Al2O3 pellets) on ammonia production are investigated in a microwave (2.45 GHz) plasma discharge by means of mass spectrometry. The calibration of the mass spectrometer and the influence of considering the background water are described. Additionally, optical emission spectroscopy is used to determine the vibrational and rotational temperatures of the molecules in the plasma.
