Dark Matter Direct Detection — •Teresa Marrodán Undagoitia — Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Heidelberg

The nature of dark matter is one of the most important unsolved questions in modern physics. Cosmological and astronomical observations provide overwhelming evidence for its existence. Although several hypothetical particle candidates have been proposed, experimental efforts have so far yielded only null results. Direct detection is a promising method to determine the nature of this dark component. It allows, for example, to probe the existence of WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) via their elastic scattering off target nuclei down to tiny cross sections. Several experimental strategies have been developed to measure the small recoils induced by the interactions of dark matter particles. The talk will give an overview of direct detection methods, and present the latest results in the search for WIMPs and other dark matter candidates.
