Beyond mean-field kinetic theory of nematic self-propelled particles — •Benjamin Kohler, Horst-Holger Boltz, and Thomas Ihle — Institute for Physics, University of Greifswald, 17489 Greifswald, Germany

We present Landau kinetic theory and direct simulation results for systems of self-propelled particles with alignment interactions of higher-order symmetry with a particular focus on nematic couplings. Systematically expanding the BBGKY-hierarchy approximation beyond the mean-field contributions, we employ the one-sided molecular chaos assumption and an diagrammatic approach to account for higher order correlations. Our calculations yield predictions with no free parameters that are in quantitative agreement with direct agent-based simulations without being restricted to low densities.
