From empty room to 3D laminograms: building and commissioning a 3D imaging endstation — •Simone Finizio — Swiss Light Source, Paul Scherrer Institut, Villigen PSI, Switzerland

In recent years, the requests of the synchrotron imaging community have significantly expanded, e.g. to include the possibility of performing nanometre scale imaging, sub-50ps time-resolved imaging, access to novel contrast mechanisms, and 3D imaging. In addition, the recent developments in both novel synchrotron radiation sources (diffraction limited 4th generation lightsources) and in the available computational power encourage the development of imaging techniques that can exploit both advances whilst also answering to the new requirements from the user community. In this tutorial, I will present how a synchrotron imaging endstation is designed, constructed, and commissioned, presenting the ideas and reasons behind a given design choice, and the challenges that need to be overcome to provide the user community with an instrument that fully exploits the new synchrotron lightsources, allowing them to perform the experiments they require, together with flexibility, user friendliness, and the possibility to automate the measurements. In particular, I will present the design, construction, and commissioning of the new SOft X-ray Phytchography Highly Integrated Endstation (SOPHIE), which will be available for user beamtimes on 3D soft X-ray laminography imaging from Q3 2026.
