We explore the ultrafast response of altermagnetic materials after optical excitation with femtosecond light pulses. For the case of RuO2, we employ ab-initio based dynamical calculations to predict the spin polarization of the optically excited carriers. Our theoretical results are confirmed by time-resolved MOKE experiments[1], which demonstrate that highly spin-polarized carrier distributions can be generated in ultrathin, strained RuO2 by tuning the excitation conditions, in particular the orientation of the light polarization vector.
