Total cross sections of 650GeV/c Σ− and π− on nuclei at SELEX — •U. Dersch, I. Eschrich, I. Konorov, H. Krüger, B. Povh, J. Simon, and K. Vorwalter — Max-Planck Institut für Kernphysik, Saupfercheckweg 1, 69117 Heidelberg
The hyperon beam line at Fermilab provides a 650GeV/c
secondary beam with a Σ−/π− ratio of about 1.5.
Combining this beam with the high accuracy tracking
devices of the SELEX silicon detector system
offers a unique opportunity to study energetic
hyperon - nucleon interaction.
Using the SELEX spectrometer we have recorded
more than 100 million minimum bias events on Be, C, CH2
and Cu targets in the 1997 run.
The aim of the present study is the determination of
the Σ− and π− total cross sections on nuclei and protons.
The analysis method chosen is a transmission technique.
The method and the status of the analysis will be presented.
