In 1997 the first barrel detector for the COSY-TOF spectrometer was
completed.
The “Barrel” consists of 3 m long scintillator bars which are read out
from both ends. With the implementation of this detector part in addition to
the endcap, scattering angles up to 80∘ become accessible with flight
paths up to 3 m.
The detector was tested with cosmic rays and was already
used in a pp-experiment at COSY running at beam momenta around 800 MeV/c
close to the 1π-threshold.
Prototype tests showed position resolutions of 8 cm (FWHM) and time resolutions
of 0.7 ns (FWHM). They are typical for the full set up for which results of
performance studies using experimental data will be presented.
