The electronic origin band spectrum of the ³Σ_u⁻ ← ³Σ_g⁻ transition of C₄ and the ¹Π_u ← X¹Σ_g⁺ transition of C₅ [1] have been recorded in the gas phase, using cavity ring down spectroscopy in a supersonic planar plasma [2]. An uniform plasma is generated both by discharge and ablation techniques. Whereas the C₅ band is heavily broadened, the C₄ spectrum clearly shows rotational structure. Besides the origin band transitions additional transitions to vibrationally excited levels in the upper electronic state are reported as well.
