The c(2×2)MnX (X=Cu, Ni, Co) surface alloys on fcc-X(001) surfaces attract interest due to their magnetic properties. In these compounds the Mn-neighbour distances are increased with respect to bulk manganese. Therefore, Mn atoms incorporated in the surface interact with Cu, Co, and Ni, respectively but not with neighbouring Mn atoms. This yields to new magnetic properties like ferromagnetic coupling to the surrounding Co- or Ni-atoms.
We present angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) together with low energy electron diffraction measurements for the c(2×2)MnX (X=Cu, Fe, Co) surface alloys. With respect to ARPES spectra of the pure substrates new additional spectral features indicate strong influence of manganese. While the Mn-3d states hybridise with the Cu 3d bands in c(2×2)MnCu, a weak dispersion indicates band-like behaviour in c(2×2)MnCo and c(2×2)MnFe. In the c(2×2)MnCu we find new states near the XCu point that are assigned on the basis of LKKR calculations to charge transfer to unoccupied Cu states and a new surface state of the alloy.
