We report the first X-ray photoelectron study of a ferric-wheel. The sample investigated was a cyclic hexanuclear Fe(III) cluster entrapping an alkaline ion [Li ⊂ Fe6L6]Cl · 6CHCl3, L=N(CH2CH2O)3. The Fe 3s and 2p core level line spectra show clear features which were attributed to a ligand-metal charge transfer. Magnetic moments were also deduced from susceptibility measurements and compared with the size of the magnetic exchange splitting of the Fe 3s line, which is proportional to the local magnetic moment of the Fe ion.
