Due to their small radii of curvature the tips of metallic nanowires are expected to exhibit high amplification factors of externally applied electric fields [1]. For copper nanowire ensembles, these enhanced electric fields lead to remarkable field emission properties [2]. Such an ensemble fabricated with the polymer template technique [3] has been tested as possible cryogenic electron source in a double Penning trap setup for the high-precision measurement of the g-factor of the proton [4]. The requirements to the electron source for these investigations are a stable current of a few tens of nA in pulsed mode and long-term stability, as well as durability at low temperatures and under high magnetic fields. In this contribution first promising experimental data of the field emission properties of a copper nanowire cathode under cryogenic conditions will be presented.
